Annular Eclipse 2023

14 October 2023 at 12:13pm ET

Ring of fire

The nodes are the two places where the moon crosses the path of the sun, so a solar eclipse always conjuncts one of the moon’s nodesn. This one is conjunct the south node.

Honor your past. Face it and let it go. You can’t change it, but you are not set in stone. You can see things differently. You can evolve. You can create your best life regardless of your past.

A solar eclipse happens when the moon passes between the sun and earth. The moon is eclipsing, or covering the sun. An annular solar eclipse happens when the moon is farthest from Earth. Since it’s farther away, it doesn’t completely cover the sun and creates the “ring of fire” effect in the sky.

Sounds super cool, right? It is though it’s crucial to protect your eyes.

It’s unsafe to view the upcoming annular eclipse without protecting your eyes.

If you look directly at the sun on a sunny day, you quickly look away because of the brightness. It’s like a reflex. During most of a solar eclipse, the sun is partly blocked by the moon, making it less bright. This tricks your eyes into looking longer than is safe.

If you stare at the sun you risk burning cells off your retina. Once they’re burned, they’re gone. It’s called solar retinopathy. The retina is the part of your eye that transmits information to the brain. Damaging your retina can lead to partial, or even permanent, blindness.

It is unsafe to look at the sun through binoculars, a camera or a telescope, because they can increase the damage done to your eyes by acting as a magnifying glass for the sun’s rays, speeding up the burning of your retinas.

You are precious. Stay safe.
