Mercury Trine Neptune

A trine is a natural flow connecting 2 or more energies in the chart. When people are first learning astrology, they may be tempted to think that some aspects are good and some are bad. For example, trines are good and squares are bad. All aspects bring talents, challenges, lessons and gifts.

Mercury is the rational mind and how we communicate via language. It’s what makes sense to us, how we think and learn, how we process information.

Neptune is our intuition, creativity, empathy and compassion. Neptune is telepathy, psychic abilities, having a visceral understanding of the experiences of others.

When Mercury and Neptune form a trine, the rational mind and intuitive mind are in harmony with each other. These people are usually very creative and imaginative and often know things without first realizing how they know them. People with this placement often develop a talent for quickly coming up with a rational explanation or set of idea breadcrumbs to explain to others how they know something.

This aspect can also manifest as self-delusion where someone imagines a story and tells it to themselves so often they start to believe it’s true. They may also imagine what others believe and internalize that as true. For some, lying to themselves and others can be easy. They can also pick up on the thoughts and feelings of others and internalize them, both to their benefit and detriment.

Neptune is considered a soft planet, and Mercury a neutral planet, so generally they work well in a soft aspect (trine is soft). The important take away here is that these energies harmonize together. Whether that harmony expresses itself in a way that is helpful, useful, loving, spiritual etc. is determined by the rest of the chart and the life lived by the individual.

Using your own chart is the best way to understand astrology.

If you have a trine in your chart, think about how the energies flow with each other in you. If you have Mercury in an aspect, think about how that energy may impact how you think and what gets your mind going.

Pick any aspect and dive into the energies in the chart and see how they work together in you, and that will teach you something about how that aspect works.

Now to Moon square Venus …

I have rediscovered reddit recently and have been answering some Astrology questions there. This morning I replied to a guy with Moon square Venus and thought I would share my answer in a blog post:

Moon square Venus is a really hard aspect to deal with in relationships. Squares create a forced awareness and there’s almost a competition between the two energies. People with this aspect can have loving, lasting relationships. I’ve seen it. I get that it feels really frustrating right now, try to resist the urge to tell yourself it’s hopeless. It’s not.

My advice is to continue on a path of self-discovery and self-acceptance in a conscious, purposeful way. It’s important for you to understand what you value and live a life of integrity.
There’s likely some karmic history where your values and emotional needs were at odds with each other. This could have played out in many ways. For example, marrying for money or someone your family forced on you. The moon is also food and survival, so your karmic past could include doing things to survive that went against your values. Sometimes people with this aspect think they are horrible people, when they haven’t done anything really terrible in this life.

The more you can own your values, act with integrity and open yourself up emotionally (even when it’s hard) the more you will become aware of what this aspect is teaching you and learn how the energies can work together.

End reddit post.

Astrology is fascinating and can lead to many personal insights. It can be tempting though to generalize and idealize something like signs or aspects, and also the reverse, to write off someone or think you’re doomed because of something you see in a chart. Remember that the natal chart itself is neutral information and contains no inherent judgements. When you see something really challenging in your chart or someone else, look at it as an opportunity. It’s a flashing neon sign giving you information that can help you focus, rather than a doomsday warning.

You always have a choice, Astrology doesn’t remove that. Astrology can help you to understand why you’ve made some of your choices and help you to understand the choices available.

I hope someone reading this wins one of the books. Let me know if you.

Good luck!

Opening to Change

Since I rebooted this blog recently, I thought it was time for a fresh look.

cropped-lake-landscape-moon-1788378.jpg

Learning Astrology helped me to appreciate and respect timing, to be willing to sense when it was time to make changes and to do it, as well as when to be bide my time and wait.

The more open we are to change and are willing to acknowledge when it’s time for change, the easier the change. The more we resist, the more it feels like changes are forced upon us. While progressions don’t predict our lives, they do show us some of the lessons and opportunities we are inviting into our lives.

Waiting has been the harder lesson. I have a super fast air moon, and the Astrologer I studied with told me the first time I met her that I have the patience of a flea. I have come to appreciate the benefits of waiting and when I sense the time is right not to act, I am more able to listen to it.

I’ll be writing more about progressions, speed of the moon, and lots of topics in future blogs. This feels like a good time though to note that while Astrology is a great tool for self-discovery, there isn’t anything you can’t learn another way. This is just one way.

I used to give talks locally on Astrology and one question I got asked almost every time was about doing readings. It went something like this, “how do you know you are telling people the truth?” My answer was always the same. The people receiving the readings know what is true for them, and if what I am telling them doesn’t resonate with them, then what I say doesn’t matter. Either it’s not true, or they aren’t willing to hear it. All I can do is to look for feedback if what I am offering is helpful. The few people that told me that the reading wasn’t helpful/accurate, contacted me later and admitted they weren’t willing to hear what I was telling them and wanted to come back.

Going forward with this blog, my intention is to teach you about Astrology. Hopefully it will be useful for you, and you will find a way to use it in a meaningful way.

Astrology has been incredibly helpful to me. I wish the same for you.

signs

Elements + Qualities = Signs

The signs are styles of expression. Everyone has all 12 signs in their chart, because your natal chart has 12 houses and each of the signs rules one of the houses in your chart.

The 12 zodiac signs are derived from the elements and qualities in Astrology. The four elements are fire, earth, air and water. All the signs of an element have some core energy in common:

Fire – action, energy, vitality
Earth – resources, sensuality, reliability
Air – ideas, communication, people oriented
Water – emotion, intuition, passion

There are three qualities in Astrology and all signs of the same quality also have some energy in common:

Cardinal – initiating, drive, ambition
Fixed – focused, tenacious, definite
Mutable – versatile, restless, seeks change

When you combine these two you get twelve combinations:

Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius are all fire signs. They all have that fire energy in common. They differ though, because they each have a different quality. Aries is the most assertive of the three fire signs and has a sense of urgency and immediacy to it. Leo is more ambitions and driven. Sagittarius is the gypsy, seeking experiences.

Capricorn, Taurus and Virgo are the earth signs. Capricorn energy seeks accomplishment. Taurus desires comfort and doesn’t like waste. Virgo seeks to make things real and tangible.

Libra, Aquarius and Gemini are air. Libra energy leads people with ideas. Aquarius energy dives deeply into ideas to discover new ones. Gemini energy seeks to know something about everything.

Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces are water. Cancer energy controls through nurturing. Scorpio energy is consuming passion. Pisces energy blends with everything to create empathy.

People often have one element and quality that dominate their chart. So even if you have the Sun in Aries, if you have a lot of earth and mutable energy in your chart, your chart would have a Virgo feel to it, since Virgo is earth and mutable.

Even without seeing your chart, try to guess what element and quality you relate most to and then look at the sign that makes and see if you can feel that energy in you. It may not be your sun sign.

Now take a look at your chart and note how many pieces are in each element and quality. The sign that you come up with is called your signature and it is yet another layer to consider when you look at your chart.

Saturn & Fathers Day

In honor of Fathers Day, here are a few words on Saturn in your natal chart.

Saturn rules time and space, it’s the energy that allows us to know we are human. Saturn shows your ability to function in human form, and is associated with limitations, burdens, safety, security, cynicism, sorrow, and discipline. Saturn rules every form of organization and management, and shows what you believe is enduring.

In Karmic Astrology, Saturn is referred to as “the price you paid for the ticket,” as it shows what you agreed to do in this lifetime in exchange for the opportunity to incarnate and grow spiritually. Saturn also defines your beliefs about men, and shows your father in this life time.

Everyone has Saturn in their chart, and the energy can be powerful and beautiful. Saturn energy shows your capacity for loyalty, commitment, how willing you are to hang in there and be there for someone. Saturn can help bring form to what you imagine, and give you the security you need to trust and believe in yourself.

Look at the sign for you Saturn to see your preferred style for this energy. Look at the house to see the area of life where you tend to most fluently express this energy. Look at aspects to Saturn to see connections with other energies.

My father passed away a few years ago, the Sunday before Fathers Day. I think of him often, and I’m grateful for the lessons he taught me, and the way he believed in me. He encouraged me to go out into the world, to live fully, to question, to learn, and to be whatever I wanted to be.

Happy Fathers Day to all the dads, and to all men that keep others safe.

The Art of Astrology

When people discuss or study Astrology, they often talk about one piece and the sign of it. While this can give some useful information, it’s just the tip of the iceberg. If you really want to understand how that piece works in a chart, you can’t look at any one piece in isolation.

Have you ever looked at a painting by Monet or one of the other French Impressionists? Up close, it can look like a hot mess. It’s can be hard to see the water lily in the water, or figure out what is being reflected. When you take a step back, you see the wholeness of the painting and can notice details that are hard to see up close.

Reading a chart is like this. You have to keep looking at the whole. If you focus too much on the sign, the house, the degree, the minutes, the element, the planet’s energy, an aspect … if you try to assign meaning to something really specific you lose the specific meaning in the chart. Two people can have their sun in Gemini, but at different degrees, in different houses, with different aspects and then there’s the fact that everything else in the chart is different. The Gemini sun with the Cancer moon is not the same as the Gemini sun with the Aries moon.

So how do you learn astrology? Learning astrology is like learning a foreign language. First you learn basic vocabulary and grammar. As your mastery of the language builds, you can appreciate humor and poetry in the language, speaking and absorbing it without first translating it in your head.

So it is with Astrology. Yes, you do need to learn what the signs mean, the houses, the planets, aspects, degrees, etc. Once you start to get these basics down you have to start integrating them. When people ask me very general questions, like “I’m a Leo, should I date a Scorpio” it’s hard for me to answer. It’s never as simple as that. I make a few general comments, that may or may not resonate with the person, because I’d have to look at both of their charts to tell them anything meaningful.

Whether or not you ever become an astrologer, studying astrology can be a fascinating hobby and over time give you great insight into yourself. The Astrologer I first studied with would tell me to keep digging into my chart, because it I had more knowledge about that person than anyone else.

Learning to see myself in the chart taught me so much about astrology. As I learned more astrology, I discovered more and more about myself.
